My name is Adam Bownes, and I’m the founder of Lumen Tutoring.
I may still be in Year 8 at King Edward’s School in Birmingham, but I’ve already learned something many people miss:
Education is much more than just learning facts — it’s about becoming a better version of yourself.
That’s why I started Lumen.
Because sometimes, a child doesn’t just need a tutor.
They need someone who sees their potential — even when they don’t see it themselves.
At Lumen, I offer tutoring for SATs which includes Maths, English Writing, Comprehension and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar), and I also tutor the primary ages below.
But what I really do is something deeper:
I create a space where a student can learn, grow, and change.
Each session is one-to-one — calm, focused, and kind.
The lessons are structured, the worksheets tailored, the homework thoughtfully designed.
It’s never rushed or overwhelming. It’s steady, thoughtful learning — just right for them.
But most importantly, I help students change not just how they study…
but how they see themselves.
I work to rebuild confidence.
To shift mindsets.
To help children go from “I can’t” to “I’m improving” to “I can.”
Because with the right support, even the most unsure learner can develop a new attitude — one of curiosity, resilience, and belief.
And that’s when the real change happens.
Lumen means light in Latin.
And that’s what I offer: a light in their learning, a guide in their growth, and a belief that every child — no matter where they begin — can rise.
